What we do/Activities

  • During the past few decades GFUSA has endeavored many outreach programs such as health fairs, Forums, birth anniversary celebrations of Gandhi and King, feed the hungry, and collaborations with leaders of various religious faiths and community organizations.
  • Specifically, since its establishment, the GFUSA has regularly organized the Birth Anniversary Observances of Mahatma Gandhi in October of each year as well as the celebration of the Anniversary of the Dedication of the Statue of Gandhi. GFUSA also celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birth anniversary annually in January held at the National Historic Site in cooperation with King Center, National Park Service, et al.
  • The GFUSA has supported the activities of other community organizations in Metro Atlanta in their fund-raising activities to promote welfare for the distressed. The Foundation has also supported NFIA, CARE and other national organizations in their fund-raising efforts to bring relief to the flood victims in India, Philippines, USA and elsewhere, globally.
  • The Gandhi Foundation supported the “Coalition for a National Memorial to Mahatma Gandhi” towards the establishment of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial in Washington, DC. Similar Statue endeavors were supported in Cleveland, Ohio, Raleigh, NC, Houston, Texas, Bellevue, WA, Florida State University.
  • The Gandhi Foundation has supported the children and teachers of Bal-Vihar in observing the Gandhi Birth Anniversary at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site.
  • The Gandhi Foundation hosted a Peace Group of Japanese from Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan, who were touring the United States to speak against nuclear weapons.
  • The Gandhi Foundation co-hosted, along with Deepa Dharamrup, Manju Vaswani et al, “EKTA”, group of underprivileged children from Gujarat who toured the United States and presented the philosophy of Gandhi in song and dance at the Rialto Theater of GSU, Atlanta.
  • GFUSA has organized numerous prayer vigils for peace on Earth!
  • The Gandhi Foundation sponsored a Peace Vigil at the site of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta, Georgia on March 13, 2003 to pray and express concerns over the threat of hostilities between Coalition forces led by the United States and Iraq.
  • The Gandhi Foundation in collaboration with South Asians For Unity (SA4U), held a Candle Light Vigil on June 16, 2002 to voice concerns and prayers for the reducing the hostilities between Pakistan and India.
  • GFUSA has collaborated with Ga. CIV and US State Department to host many International delegations visiting Atlanta.
  • GFUSA works very closely with the Southern Christian Leadership Council (SCLC) besides a host of other diverse spiritual and non-profit organizations. GFUSA has hosted numerous national and international dignitaries. GFUSA regularly participates in the Sweet Auburn Festival.
  • Its noteworthy to mention that Mrs. Coretta Scott King and Mrs. Christine King Farris (sister of Dr. King) took personal interest in the installation of the Gandhi Statue as well as the Gandhi Room at the Freedom Hall, King Center, both of which are visited by millions annually.

  • GFUSA organized a Theater play “Gandhi “ produced by Syam Yellamraju on Jan 15, 2012.
  • The Gandhi Foundation celebrated the Fifth Anniversary of the installation and the dedication of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, as well as Republic Day of India at the site of the statue at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta, Georgia on January 26, 2003.
  • The Gandhi Foundation has co-sponsored many health fairs along with “Sai Health Fair”, organized by Dr. Sujatha Reddy. This all-inclusive Health Fair excellently organized with the support of over 50 medical doctors of various disciplines, offering free consultations and inexpensive blood tests. This fair has the financial support of many pharmaceutical firms and was well appreciated in the community – Indian American and others.
  • The Gandhi Foundation of USA co-sponsored a dinner reception for Pratham, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating illiterate children living in the slums of India on June 2, 2003. A versatile actress and the toast of Bollywood movies, Madam Waheeda Rehman, presented the case for Pratham as their good will ambassador.
  • The Gandhi Foundation observed the 134th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on September 27, 2003 at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in the heart of the Martin Luther King Jr. Historic District. The program commanded the highest degree of diversity.
  • GFUSA has undertaken many Advocacy campaigns on Socio-welfare and socio-educational issues and also partnering with Center for Civil and Human Rights.
  • GFUSA took the lead in organizing a Fundraising Community Banquet to retain King Papers in Georgia with partnership of then City of Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin.
  • GFUSA co-hosted the Religious Symposium at Emory, which featured His Holiness Dalai Lama and the related presentation of the Gandhi Peace Pilgrim Award to H.H.
  • GFUSA has co-hosted many dignitaries to include numerous Ambassadors and VIPs of India, Chief Justice Balakrishnan, Mayor of Ahmadabad, Chief Ministers from Maharashtra, Karnataka, and other VIPs.
  • Joint Venture with Oglethorpe University Museum and Art Exhibition!
  • Partnered and celebrated with Asian American Chamber of Commerce for the passage of the India-Georgia Friendship Resolution 1248 in the Georgia Senate in 2008.
  • Hosted numerous tributes and homage to Gandhi including by Narain Desai in joint-venture with Georgia State University.
  • Hosted Gandhiji’s granddaughter Ela Gandhi, Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, Baba Ramdev, Anna Hazare, Javed Akhtar and many other luminaries at the Gandhi Statue, Atlanta!
